Haley's Comet

To all my readers, a gift. I am writing (TRYING to anyway) a novel. So you guys get a taste of the very first 2 pages of it. I plan on installing it throughout the year in my web journal. Post ur comments!

***AngelHearts*** ~ Melissa

“Haaaaaaaaallleyyy!”  Arija screamed up the stairs. “I’m coming! Hold your horses.” Haley Grinder was TRYING to get ready for school, but of course her stupid little sister had to bother her. It was her very first day of 8th grade, and she was not going to look like a slob hobo. Haley’s room looked pretty average for a 14 year old. Magazines piled in the corner, music cds strewn across her powder blue desk. The only thing that really stuck out of her “normal” room was a beautiful rainbow necklace. Haley wore it every day of her life. It was just a plain silver circle, but the rainbow swirls inside moved constantly.  Her Ma told her that it was the last thing her father gave to her before he died. Of course, Haley was only 5 when her dad died, and Arija was only a baby. “HAALLEYYY!! Ma says if you don’t get down her she is going to eat your breakfast for you!” Haley sighed, finally deciding on a brown tank top and a white bubble skirt. She clipped on her necklace and hurtled down the stairs, no way was Ma going to get her breakfast! When Haley reached the kitchen, Arija and Ma were already at the table. Ma or Karyn which was her real name, was pretty for her age. Dark brown curls and blue eyes that danced were normal for her. Arija looked just like Ma, but Haley looked like her Da. Stick board straight red hair, and blue eyes were her traits.  “ You excited for your new school Haley?” Ma said out of no where. “Yep” Ma knew better than to talk to Haley when she was eating. She was completely concentrated on her eggs and was not going to look up till she was done. She wanted to avoid as much conversation as possible.

Haley grabbed her new bag packed to exploding point, and dashed out the door. It was still warm (it was only August) so it was perfect for walking.  She thought of the dream she had the other night…………..

“Da? DA!?”  “Da where are you?”

“Don’t worry Haley, you can do it without me.”

“Do what da? What am I supposed to do!?”

“Save…..save……..Lurrel”

“NO! Da don’t die!! DA!”

The last thing she remembered her dad ever saying to her. Haley tried to convince herself that it was just a silly dream. There was no such thing as Lurrel. She didn’t even know what “Lurrel” was. Shaking the thought from her mind, she arrived at school: Dublin Middle School.

“Haley?”  She had been daydreaming again. Her first day back and she already had to sit through a hot, boring History class.

Miss. Grinder can you please give us the answer to this?” she pointed at a question in scrawl writing:  What Year did World War 2 end?

“ Umm….” How was she supposed to know? Of course she wasn’t paying attention.

“A demerit I think, Miss. Grinder for not paying attention.” Mrs. Kaiwarer said.

That is so unfair! A demerit her very first day of school! What a way to start of the day.

However, the rest of the day didn’t go that well either. None of Haley’s friends were in her class except for Andrea, but she was only in one of Haley’s classes. Principal Darten announced that starting next week, the school would be getting uniforms.

“UNIFORMS?” Haley and her friends were all sitting eating lunch. “That is insane!” Andrea piped up. “No kidding.” Haley was already in the worst mood of her life.  They girls and boys hurried to look at the school bulletin board to see the new uniforms. The list went like this:

Girls Uniforms                                                               Boys Uniforms

Knee high socks (white or green only)                       Khaki Pants

Dark green blazer                                                            Dark Green Blazer

White or blue oxford shirt                                              Blue Oxford Shirt

Green Plaid skirt                                                             School Color Tie

 School Color Tie                                                              Dress Shoes

Dress Shoes (Tennis Shoes for gym)                    (Tennis Shoes For gym)

“Your kidding me!” There was an uproar in the hall. Blazers in the summer time??! Were they trying to kill them??!?

“We have to wear dress shoes ALL the time?!”

“ A tie? What the heck do they want us to wear ties for?!”

“ Knee Highs? Do they KNOW how unfashionable those are?!”

Haley was the only one who wasn’t freaking out. She thought It could have been worse.

The walk home seemed a lot less enjoyable. She had a demerit. She was getting uniforms. She had a load of homework. Could it be any worse?!
